Bike Trip and merit badge

For those working on cycling merit badge or just to have a good time, join us for a bike trip around Owasco Lake on Saturday, September 16. Owasco, at 11 miles, the smallest of the Finger Lakes, runs between Moravia (Fillmore Glen) and Auburn. There will be two groups, one going around Owasco for a 38 mile trip and a second group going over 50 miles.

Depart from FCC at 9:00 am Saturday, carpool to Fillmore Glen in Moravia and bike from there. We plan to return to FCC by 4:30 pm.

As we are driving to Moravia, it is critical to know the number of boys going to make sure there are enough bike racks, e-mail Mot1@cornell.edu  to confirm your participation and indicate if you plan to do the short (38 mile) or long (>50 mile) ride.  For the cycling merit badge, you must plan out the route (the 50 miler).  Let me know if you want to satisfy this requirement and I'll send you a sheet to file a bike plan.

Logistics: Bring your bike, a bicycle helmet (
required), and a water bottle.  We will eat lunch at the top of Owasco lake, but you are responsible for bringing your own food (but you won't have to carry it so coolers are okay). To confirm your attendance or get more information, please contact Mike Thompson mot1@cornell.edu or phone 273-4927

International Brotherhood Camporee

This year the Camporee is held in a Wellesley Island State Park on the water in the beautiful Thousand Islands region of New York State. With around 3000 scouts expected this is essentially a mini-National Jamboree with lots of different activities and exhibits for the scouts to explore: state police exhibit, an army setup with Hummers and other equipment, a lumberjack display, and traditional scouting events. Patch trading is a traditional event. There should be a wonderful campfire Saturday night, and a closing ceremony Sunday around 10 am.

Scoutmaster Message

The first troop meeting of the year was really exciting. We have started our scouting year. POPCORN SALES START. We challenge to scouts to earn the money needed for the rafting trip in the spring. Popcorn sales support troop operations costs, buy awards and camping equipment, and contribute to Council Expenses. Two thirds of the sale price returns to support local scouting.

Mark D and others provided soccer instruction, Tony Brock talked about salesmanship, and the scouts thought about merit badges that might interest them. We are lucky to have Rick Grossman again organizing our Merit Badge University. Scouts should think about signing up with him for Reading or Scholarship merit badges. To learn about merit badges, look at:

Mike Thompson is taking the lead this fall on cycling merit badge. A lot of our scouts have put in most of the required miles already. Lets see, does 100 miles around the lake count for one 50-mile trip and two 25-mile trips? But there are also issues of bike maintenance and safety. So there is a bike trip Saturday 16  September: meet at the church 9 am.

We excited about the Canadian-US International Brotherhood Camporee at Wellesley Island in the Thousand Islands on Sept. 29 - Oct. 1;  meet at the church 5 pm Friday and return before dinner Sunday. Patrols will plan Breakfast Sat. through lunch Sunday. We will probably stop for dinner Friday, and return before dinner Sunday.

Stay tuned for more adventure,  Jery Stedinger, Scoutmaster

Michael Deyhim - Eagle Scout

Congratulations to Michael, he has joined the list of Eagle Scouts from troop 2 and his family, the troop and the scouting movement can all be proud of his achievements. Michael's project entailed clearing out the old composting area at our sponsor organization, First Congregational Church, clearing out undergrowth and then improving the pathways and building three new composting stations. Michael has now graduated from Ithaca High School and we wish him well for the future.
