Goodbyes

The June Court of Honor this week recognized several important transitions for the troop and our scouts.

We have five graduating seniors who have been long-standing and important members of our community: Daniel Carcich, Ben Farr, Carter Hirtle, Garrett Tate and Peter Wheeler. All either attained the rank of Eagle scout or served as Senior Patrol Leader - and some did both. Each of them has left their mark on the troop. Garrett was awarded his fifth eagle palm (41 merit badges), and Ben his sixth (46 merit badges). WOW. Carter was recognized as our latest eagle scout. Peter will be our next eagle scout. Peter and Garrett will be on staff this summer at Barton. We thank each and all of them for their service and devotion to the troop, and wish them luck on their journey.

The Troop committee also recognized Tom Hirasuna who has served for many years as the newsletter editor, Troop Committee member, and Assistant Scoutmaster before joining the Committee. Twice as a Scoutmaster he took the troop to summer camps in the Adirondacks (Camps Portaferry and Sabattis), and he joined us camping at Barton or on weekends (in dry, wet and snowy weather). He has also served as a moral compass among the adult leaders. Tom has put many years of service into the troop and we appreciate his devotion. The newsletter has really been wonderful.

The Troop also expresses its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Jessica Carcich. Her third child, Daniel, has now finished High School and she is retiring as Chair of the Troop Committee. While the activities of the Committee are not always visible to the scouts and their parents, their leadership and efforts are critical to the health and operation of the troop. For two years Jessica has directed the committee to perform its important tasks as well as maneuvering around the obstacles that challenge organizations like ours. She has also taken on many specific jobs herself, including organizing two great Memorial Day weekend trips.  We thank her for her scout spirit, her steady vision of what a troop should be, her leadership of the committee, and her many efforts on our behalf.

May the great master of all scouts be with these friends, this day and always.

Yours in scouting,

Mari Tiwari
Incoming Committee Chair

Jery Stedinger
Scoutmaster

Also a note from Mark Wheeler, Peter Wheeler's father: "The Court of Honor brings a bit of nostalgia for me. The scouts who make it through the program have a right to be proud of their Troop, as well as their individual accomplishments. The senior class is a great group - they've come a long way from 11 year olds bearing the rank of Scout.  They have continued the Troop 2 tradition by focusing on traditional scouting skills and working on their advancement through the ranks. I remember fondly some of the early campouts when they were Tenderfoots !

I offer my special congratulations to Ben, Dan, Carter, Pete and Garrett.  Good luck to you all and may the Scout Oath and Scout Law guide you always."

Garrett Tate received the 2005 Gorget Award from the Taughannock District, presented by Mike Homrighaus, representing the district, at the Court of Honor. Congratulations, Garrett.

Church Service Project, 6/27

Troop 2 will be doing a service project for the church on Monday, June 27, 9-11am (rain date: Wednesday, June 29).  We will move wood chips from the upper parking lot and spread them on the paths in the garden.  Bring gloves, a hat, shovel, metal rake, and possibly a pitchfork.  We have 3 wheelbarrows.  This will count as service hours for advancement. Questions?  Call Robin Stedinger 257-8016.

Camp Barton Signups

Plan for a great week July 3 -  9 with the troop at Camp Barton. We have spaces for about 20 scouts, so tell Mr. Tate that you want to go ASAP. Older scouts can sail with the Helmsman program or SCUBA dive or, NEW this year, do advanced Scoutcraft within the Woodsman program. Cost is $210, with checks payable to Troop 2 BSA. Full payment is due. Every scout will need a new medical permission form http://www.badenpowellcamps.org/MedicalFormClass1.pdf. Also required is a physical within the last 3 years (we have old copies on file) http://www.badenpowellcamps.org/MedicalFormClass2.pdf. Permission for medication is also needed. http://www.badenpowellcamps.org/medicationpermission.pdf

Troop Committee vacancies

Time catches up with all of us and the end of this year sees the standing down of Tom Hirasuna and Jessica Carcich due to their sons reaching adulthood and Diane Beckwith due to outside commitments. We are looking for two, hopefully three, parents to step up and take part in the running of the troop. Unless you take on a position within the committee, responsibilities consist of monthly meetings at FCC during the school year. It is not time consuming and gives an opportunity to get involved with a great bunch of people.
